About LAIS

The Louisville Area Iris Society (LAIS) was founded in 1952 by a small group of iris fanciers. Since then, over the years we have grown to a membership that exceeds 140, and extends from Southern Indiana south to Hodgenville, Kentucky and east to Frankfort, Kentucky.

We meet at St Mark's Episcopal Church, 2322 Frankfort Avenue, Louisville, Kentucky on the first Thursday of every other month, starting in February, except in August. This meeting is the third Saturday at 5:00p.m. at the church and is a picnic and auction. Interesting and educational programs are a feature of each regular meeting, and our refreshments are noteworthy!

Our annual Iris Show is held the weekend nearest the 15th of May, featuring a grand display and often potted irises for sale to the public. We also have a rhizome sale, held with The Kentucky Daffodil Society, The Louisville Area Daylily Society, and Hostas of Kentuckiana, on the first Saturday in August at Frank Otte Nursery In St. Matthews.

Our membership year runs from July lst to June 30th. Dues are $7.00 single $10.00 dual, same household. Officers serve a term of two years and are installed at the December meeting in even-numbered years.

Membership in the American Iris Society (AIS), with which we are affiliated, offers many benefits to individuals, and we encourage you to consider joining this national organization.

All local members of the American Iris Society are automatically members of Region 7 of the AIS, comprised of AIS members in Kentucky and Tennessee. Regional meetings are held three times a year and are educational, fun, and a great way to get to know more Irisarians! The Region 7 bulletin, THE IRISARIAN, is published Spring and Fall.
