Different types of iris have different growing requirements. The bearded iris (those with the furry caterpillar looking thing on the falls) require very good drainage, while the beardless iris requires much more moisture.

The bearded types are:

MDB (Miniature Dwarf Bearded)
SDB (Standard Dwarf Bearded)
lB (Intermediate Bearded)
BB (Border Bearded)
MTB (Miniature Tall Bearded)
TB (Tall Bearded)

Some beardless types are:

SIB (Siberian Iris)
JI (Japanese Iris)
LA (Louisiana Iris)
